A window and door installation RAMS — that's a Risk Assessment combined with a Method Statement — is one of the most common documents requested from fenestration contractors and general builders working on both domestic and commercial sites. Whether you're fitting a single casement window or replacing every unit on a multi-storey block, understanding what a thorough RAMS actually needs to say keeps your workers safe and demonstrates due diligence to clients, principal contractors, and enforcement authorities.

What Is a RAMS and Who Needs One?

A RAMS is two documents in one:

  • Risk Assessment — your systematic identification of hazards, who is at risk, and the controls you put in place. The legal duty sits in Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which applies to virtually every employer and self-employed person.
  • Method Statement — a plain-English description of how the work will be done, step by step, so everyone on site understands the safe system of work before they start.

If the installation is part of a construction project with a construction phase (and a domestic client is not exempt from CDM 2015 in all respects), the principal contractor may require your RAMS as part of the Construction Phase Plan. Even on smaller jobs without CDM implications, many principal contractors and commercial clients make a RAMS a contractual requirement — and it's good practice regardless.

Key Hazards to Address

Window and door installation involves a cluster of well-recognised hazards. Your risk assessment must deal with each one honestly, not just list them.

Working at Height

This is the headline risk. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require you to avoid working at height where reasonably practicable, and where it cannot be avoided, to use work equipment that prevents a fall, before relying on equipment that merely arrests one. In practice:

  • Ground-floor installations may be manageable from a low-level platform or hop-up
  • Upper-floor external work typically requires a scaffold, mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), or properly footed and tied ladder where alternatives are not reasonably practicable
  • Internal fitting from inside the building (removing and replacing from indoors, where geometry permits) can reduce or eliminate external height exposure — consider this at the planning stage

Manual Handling

Window units — especially large double-glazed aluminium or timber frames — are heavy and awkward. Manual handling injuries are among the most common in the trade. Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992:

  • Can the lift be avoided? Mechanical aids such as glazing suckers, trolleys, and wall-mounted frame carriers reduce injury risk significantly
  • If manual handling cannot be eliminated, assess the task against factors including weight, posture, repetition, and individual capability
  • Two-person lifts and clear communication between operatives should be built into the method statement

Glazing and Sharp Edges

Broken glass is a serious laceration risk during removal of old units. The method statement should specify:

  • The sequence for removing old glazing safely (tape before breaking if necessary, never strike glass without eye and hand PPE)
  • Appropriate gloves (cut-resistant, rated to EN 388)
  • Safe disposal route for glazing waste — shards must be wrapped before binning

Dust and Debris

Cutting back reveals, drilling masonry, or disturbing old frames can generate silica dust if masonry or concrete is involved. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), you must assess exposure to hazardous substances and implement controls in the correct order: eliminate dust generation where possible, use on-tool extraction, wet cutting, or local exhaust ventilation before relying on respiratory protective equipment (RPE). If silica dust is genuinely present, a suitable FFP3 respirator (not a basic dust mask) is the minimum RPE where engineering controls alone don't achieve adequate control.

Falling Objects

Removed frames, fixings, and tools dropped from height are a risk to those below. Exclusion zones, toe boards on scaffold, and tool lanyards where appropriate should feature in your controls.

Structural Stability

Removing a frame from a load-bearing or partially load-bearing opening can affect the structural integrity of the wall, particularly in older properties where lintels may be inadequate or absent. Your method statement should confirm that a structural assessment has been made (by a competent person where there is any doubt) before work starts.

Structure of a Good Method Statement

Your method statement should follow the actual sequence of work:

  1. Site set-up, access, and exclusion zones
  2. Isolation of any services near the opening (electricity, gas lines in the vicinity)
  3. Removal of the existing frame or door
  4. Preparation of the opening
  5. Installation of the new unit, including fixing details
  6. Sealing, finishing, and weather-proofing
  7. Glazing (if supplied separately)
  8. Inspection, testing, and clean-up
  9. Waste disposal

Each step should reference the relevant controls from your risk assessment.

Using the Correct Hierarchy of Controls

A common mistake is jumping straight to PPE. The correct hierarchy — eliminate the hazard, substitute for something safer, use engineering controls, apply administrative controls, then PPE as a last layer — should be visible in how you've written your controls, not just listed as a tick-box.

Keeping Your RAMS Current

A RAMS is not a one-off document. Review it when:

  • The scope of work changes significantly
  • A near miss or incident occurs
  • You're working in a new building type (e.g., a listed building with non-standard construction)
  • You take on new workers unfamiliar with your systems
