A piling method statement is one of the most technically demanding documents a ground works contractor will produce. Get it wrong and you risk not just regulatory scrutiny under CDM 2015, but real harm — collapsing excavations, struck-by incidents involving heavy plant, and damage to adjacent structures. This guide explains what belongs in a piling method statement and why each section matters.

Why a Method Statement Is Required for Piling

Piling is almost always construction work within the scope of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015). Where a project has more than one contractor, or lasts longer than 30 working days with more than 20 workers simultaneously, a Principal Contractor must be appointed and a Construction Phase Plan must be in place before work starts.

The piling method statement feeds directly into that plan. Piling without confirmed ground conditions is a foreseeable risk. Reference the geotechnical report or site investigation data you are working from. State how buried services have been identified — CAT scanning, GPR survey, utility records — and the minimum standoff distances you will observe. Striking a live HV cable with a piling rig is a fatal event; the method statement must show this has been thought through systematically.

3. Plant and Equipment

Name the rig(s), crane capacity if applicable, and any ancillary plant (concrete pumps, spoil skips, auger cleaning equipment). Include:

  • Rig certification and current thorough examination records (LOLER 1998 where lifting is involved)
  • Ground bearing pressure calculations confirming the platform can support the rig
  • Exclusion zone dimensions around operating plant

4. Sequence of Operations

Write this as a clear, step-by-step sequence that a supervisor on the ground can actually follow:

  1. Establish and verify working platform to approved specification
  2. Set out pile positions and agree with engineer
  3. Position rig; confirm services clearance
  4. Commence boring/driving to specified depth
  5. Integrity check / install reinforcement cage
  6. Pour concrete or grout to designed mix and slump
  7. Record and log each pile on completion sheet
  8. Move to next position following agreed sequence

The sequence is not bureaucracy — it is the mechanism that prevents operatives improvising under time pressure.

5. Risk Assessment Integration
