Joinery Method Statement Template: What UK Joiners Actually Need to Include

If you've been asked to provide a joinery method statement template by a principal contractor or client, you're not alone. It's one of the most common document requests in the trade — and one of the most poorly understood. This guide explains what a method statement actually is, what it must contain for joinery work, and how to build one that reflects how the job will genuinely be done.


What Is a Method Statement (and Why Does Joinery Need One)?

A method statement is a written sequence of work that describes how a task will be carried out safely. It sits alongside a risk assessment — together they form a RAMS (Risk Assessment + Method Statement). The risk assessment identifies the hazards and controls; the method statement describes the step-by-step process that puts those controls into practice.

There is no single piece of legislation that mandates a method statement by name. The underlying duty is the requirement to plan, manage and monitor work safely. For joinery contractors, the risk assessment obligation flows from Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Where joinery work forms part of a construction project (a new build, refurbishment or fit-out), CDM 2015 also requires principal contractors to coordinate safe working methods across the site — which is why they ask subcontractors for RAMS before allowing them to start.


What a Joinery Method Statement Template Should Cover

There is no prescribed format, but a document that will satisfy a principal contractor or HSE inspector typically includes the following sections.

1. Project and Scope Details

  • Company name, address and contact
  • Project name and site address
  • Description of the specific joinery work (first fix, second fix, bespoke joinery installation, shopfitting, etc.)
  • Dates and duration
  • Principal contractor / client name

2. Key Personnel and Competence

List the supervisor responsible for the work, the operatives involved, and any relevant qualifications or trade experience (e.g., City & Guilds carpentry, NVQ Level 3, CSCS cards). Competence is a legal requirement under both MHSWR 1999 and CDM 2015.

3. Plant, Equipment and Tools

List all tools and equipment to be used — hand tools, power tools (circular saws, routers, nail guns), access equipment, lifting aids. Any powered equipment should reference relevant PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) checks. Inspection and PAT records should be available on request.

4. Materials

Specify the materials involved: timber species, sheet materials (MDF, plywood, OSB), fixings, adhesives, finishes. Where materials produce dust, solvents or vapours, reference the COSHH assessment (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002). MDF and hardwood dust are respiratory sensitisers — this is not a minor point.

5. Step-by-Step Method

This is the core of the document. Walk through the work in logical order:

  1. Site set-up — demarcate work area, check drawings and measurements, ensure materials are stored safely
  2. Cutting operations — location of cutting (workshop vs. on-site), dust extraction requirements, blade guards in place
  3. Assembly and installation — sequencing, temporary supports, fixing methods
  4. Working at height — if installing ceiling-height joinery, fitting staircases, or fixing overhead, specify the access equipment (hop-up, podium steps, tower scaffold) and reference the Work at Height Regulations 2005
  5. Finishing — sanding, staining, lacquering — ventilation requirements and skin/respiratory protection
  6. Clearing up — waste segregation, dust cleaning (vacuum rather than sweep), tool storage

6. Hazards, Risks and Controls

This is where the method statement and risk assessment genuinely overlap. Summarise the main hazards and the controls applied. Use the hierarchy: eliminate → substitute → engineering controls → administrative controls → PPE (PPE is the last resort, not the first).

8. Review and Sign-Off

The method statement should be signed and dated by the person who prepared it and, ideally, countersigned by the site supervisor. It should be reviewed if the scope of work changes materially.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

Generic templates filed and forgotten. A method statement must reflect the actual job. A principal contractor worth their salt will reject a document that lists hazards irrelevant to the task or misses obvious ones (like MDF dust on a shopfitting job).

Missing the COSHH link. Joinery regularly involves hazardous dust and finishing chemicals. A method statement that doesn't reference substance controls is incomplete.

Treating PPE as the primary control. Dust masks do not replace on-tool extraction. Write your controls in the correct order.

No version control. If the method changes on site, update the document. An outdated RAMS is worse than useless if something goes wrong.


Keeping It Proportionate

For a straightforward second-fix joinery task with familiar materials in a controlled environment, the method statement need not be exhaustive. For complex bespoke installations, work at height, or jobs involving significant dust or solvent exposure, the detail should increase accordingly. The test is whether the document genuinely helps your operatives work safely — not whether it fills a folder.
