Ductwork installation sits at a busy crossroads of hazards — work at height, manual handling, sharp sheet metal edges, confined or restricted spaces, and often live building environments. Getting your RAMS right before work starts is not just good practice; for most commercial ductwork projects it is a contractual and legal requirement. What Is a RAMS?

A RAMS is a Risk Assessment plus a Method Statement — two separate but linked documents usually issued together.

When Is a Ductwork RAMS Required?

On any notifiable project under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015), the Principal Contractor will normally require subcontractor RAMS before work begins. Even on smaller, non-notifiable jobs, Regulation 3 of MHSWR 1999 still requires a suitable and sufficient risk assessment if you employ five or more workers (and best practice demands one regardless of size).

  3. Engineering controls — MEWPs or properly erected podium steps instead of step ladders; mechanical lifting aids for heavy duct sections; on-tool extraction when cutting.
  4. Administrative controls — permit to work for confined ceiling voids; toolbox talks before each new phase; site induction records; clear task sequencing to separate trades.
  5. PPE — cut-resistant gloves for handling sheet metal, RPE appropriate to the substance (check COSHH assessment for correct grade), safety footwear, hard hat, eye protection when drilling overhead.

What the Method Statement Must Include

The method statement translates risk assessment findings into a practical, step-by-step safe system of work. For ductwork installation it should cover:

  • No COSHH assessment for sealants and adhesives — COSHH 2002 requires a specific assessment for each substance; the safety data sheet alone is not sufficient.
  • Missing signatures — workers should sign the RAMS to confirm they have read, understood and had the opportunity to ask questions. Keep records.

Keeping Your RAMS Live

A RAMS is not a one-off document. Review it when:

  • The scope of work changes (new zones, different duct specification).
  • An incident or near-miss occurs.
  • Environmental conditions change significantly (e.g., the building becomes occupied mid-project).

Under Regulation 3 of MHSWR 1999, the risk assessment must remain suitable and sufficient throughout the project — not just on day one.
