Concrete Pour Method Statement: What UK Contractors Need to Include
A concrete pour method statement is one of the most commonly requested documents on UK construction sites, yet it is also one of the most inconsistently written. Whether you are pouring strip foundations, a ground-bearing slab, or an elevated deck, the method statement half of your RAMS needs to do a specific job: tell anyone reading it exactly how the work will be carried out safely, step by step.
This guide explains what to include, which regulations apply, and how to structure the document so it holds up to scrutiny from a principal contractor, CDM coordinator, or HSE inspector.
Why a Method Statement Is Required
Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (reg 3), every employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. The method statement sits alongside that risk assessment — together they form a RAMS. The method statement translates your risk controls into a practical sequence of work; the risk assessment justifies why those controls are proportionate.
On notifiable projects, CDM 2015 requires the principal contractor to plan, manage and monitor construction phase work. A concrete pour RAMS will typically be required as part of the Construction Phase Plan or as a pre-task document before work begins.
The Core Sections Every Concrete Pour Method Statement Should Cover
1. Project and Task Information
Include the project name and address, the specific location of the pour (e.g. "ground-floor slab, grid lines A–D"), the date or programme week, the name of the responsible supervisor, and the revision number of the document.
2. Scope of Works
Describe exactly what is being poured — volume, mix specification (e.g. C25/30 XC2), method of placement (pump, skip, direct chute), and the intended finished level or finish type (e.g. power-floated, tamped). A reader should understand the task without needing to ask follow-up questions.
3. Sequence of Operations
This is the heart of the document. Walk through each stage in order:
- Pre-pour checks — formwork inspected and signed off, reinforcement checked against drawings, pour stop positions agreed, ground conditions confirmed
- Concrete delivery and testing — slump/flow testing on arrival, delivery ticket checks, maximum wait time before rejection
- Placement — direction of pour, maximum drop height for pump hose (important for segregation control), compaction with poker vibrator, vibrator spacing and duration
- Finishing — screeding, floating, curing method (e.g. polythene sheet, curing compound, wet hessian), minimum curing period
- Formwork striking — criteria for striking (minimum strength, time or cube results), sequence to avoid premature loading
- Housekeeping and washout — designated washout area, disposal of surplus concrete and washings
4. Plant, Equipment and Materials
List every item: concrete pump or crane and skip, poker vibrators (and backup), screed boards, bull floats, levels, lighting if working in low-light conditions, welfare facilities, and the concrete specification itself.
5. COSHH Considerations
Wet concrete is a hazardous substance under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. Cement is strongly alkaline and causes cement dermatitis and chemical burns, often without the operative noticing until after the pour. Your method statement must reference the COSHH assessment and specify:
- Waterproof gloves, waterproof boots, and sleeve protection as minimum PPE
- Eye protection where splashing is likely (pump lines, skip discharge)
- Barrier cream and washing facilities on site
- Procedures if concrete enters boots or gloves — remove immediately and wash
Silica dust from dry cutting or grinding hardened concrete is a separate COSHH issue; if any cutting follows the pour, that needs its own assessment.
6. Work at Height
If the pour involves elevated formwork, a pump boom operating above ground level, or operatives working on the edge of a slab, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply. Apply the hierarchy: can the task be done from ground level? If not, use collective protection (edge protection, guardrails) before relying on personal fall arrest equipment. State the specific edge protection specification and how it is installed before the pour begins.
7. Supervision, Competence and Communication
Name the competent person responsible for overseeing the pour. State how operatives have been briefed (toolbox talk, site induction) and how changes mid-pour will be communicated — particularly important when multiple subcontractors are involved.
8. Emergency Arrangements
Include the site emergency contact number, nearest A&E location, and the procedure if a formwork failure occurs during the pour. A formwork collapse is a foreseeable event with serious consequences and must be addressed.

Keeping the Document Live
A method statement is not a filing exercise. Brief your gang against it before the pour starts, record that briefing, and update the document if site conditions change. A document dated three weeks before the pour that nobody has seen is of limited value to anyone — including you, if an incident occurs.
Done properly, a concrete pour method statement protects your workers, satisfies your contractual obligations under CDM 2015, and demonstrates the standard of planning that safe construction work genuinely requires.
